Wooden Walls: An exploration of the Newman Bros factory and Birmingham’s industrious past

(With thanks to our funders - the national lottery heritage fund)

Wooden Walls, which was ran in partnership with the Coffin Works Museum, took a group of 11-18 year olds and taught them about the heritage of one of Birmingham’s most interesting historic sites - the Newman Bros Factory.

The project was open to all and allowed our members to make friends and learn new skills - and at no cost to them or their parets.

Through looking at the heritage and history associated with the Coffin Works/Newman Bros Factory, we devised three performances looking at:

  • Women in the workplace

  • Birmingham’s industrious past

  • Legacy after death

The Coffin Works was, for around 100 years, the premium coffin makers and funeral equipment provider in the UK, and the project attempted to explore this illustrious history, whilst making the themes accessible and appropriate for individuals aged 11-18.

This project took place through September, October and November (2019), with the performance happening on the 9th November. An exhibition will be up at the Coffin Works from January 2020 and will showcase the project to a wider audience.

This project was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
